Picture a Christmas

Jackson dislikes coloring and drawing; however, he likes to write. Confused? Let me explain. A couple of weeks ago, Jackson brought home a "drawing" from church. On it I could see many letters and numbers. I asked him, "What is this a picture of?"
He answered, "Um, there's 36, 5, 4 . . ."
Rethinking my question, I asked, "What were you supposed to draw? What did the teacher ask you to draw?"
"My family"

I have since learned, however, that drawing isn't so bad for him as long as he can copy what he sees. Funny thing is that he still gets frustrated because he can't make it look right. Call me incorrigible, but I again I wanted him to "color" with me; so, recently, one afternoon, I pulled out some crayons and paper and sat next to him and just began a random drawing. I decided to call it a Christmas drawing since lately he loves anything having to do with Christmas. I described it as I went. Here is what I drew (I warn you, I'm only a "mom-artist" not a professional):

Jackson saw this, and said, "Let me see it." and he began drawing his own version of my picture. He needed a little help with some of the individual objects, but he sure tried. If you look closely, you can see a stocking, a present, even a person that's supposed to be on the picture hanging over the mantle. Oh, and that little crown looking thing was his attempt at making a star.

  1. He did great!! And I really like this idea; I'm going to try it with Logan (he's not one to draw very much, either.)

  2. Look at all he can draw!!He can do it - he just needs some shapes ideas. Round like an orange for the head..Making the connections between words and seeing, perhaps.
Save those drawings, write down their explanations, date them. Keep the best.
